Assaulting the “Deep State:” Trump’s Executive Order Faces Concerns from Experts
Staying true to his words, Trump quickly signed an executive order on January 20, calling for remote work to stop. The president’s mandate states that heads of government departments must make sure employees return to work in person as soon as possible, though some exceptions could be made. The official order reads:
“Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary.
This memorandum shall be implemented consistent with applicable law.”
This move caused a lot of confusion. Government workers were unsure what the order meant because it didn’t clearly explain who could still work remotely. Some people wondered which jobs might count as exceptions to the rule. Others are worried that this decision could lead to a lot of workers choosing to quit rather than return to the office, which could be harmful. Experts warned that such a sudden change could lower the efficiency of all government services.
Even though Trump’s order mainly affects government workers, it could also impact people who rely on those services, like Social Security claimants. Trump is trying to undo an agreement made in December 2024 that allowed federal workers to work remotely until 2029. His goal to end remote work might cause problems for many Americans, especially since agencies are already struggling with staff shortages.
The Social Security Administration is already facing a backlog of over 1 million cases, with some claims taking more than 200 days to process. If more workers leave, it could make things even worse, leading to longer wait times and delays in services.
While this return-to-office order could create obstacles, we want to reassure you that we are committed to providing the best service to you, our valued clients.
