Social Security Announces Plans to Reduce Workforce and Offices
On February 27, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced plans to reduce its workforce and office locations. These cuts will eliminate the field offices and SSA representatives that disabled and retired citizens depend on for assistance. Those who remain will be reassigned to new job roles within the agency. Some of these moves may be involuntary and could require retraining.
In an agency-wide email, SSA asked employees to choose between voluntary reassignments or separating by March 14, 2025. To support the employees considering separating, SSA made the following incentive offers:
- Voluntary Early Retirement (VERA) or “Early Out”
- Voluntary Separation Incentive Payments (VSIP)
- Optional Retirement or,
- Resignation
