From the Washington Post’s comment section where there is still some value: Protect your identity by putting a security freeze on your credit files at Transunion, Experion and Equifax.

• Go to My Social Security and sign up online if you haven’t yet. Save emails you receive while doing so.

• Next, print your benefit statement (SS Statement), Benefit Verification Letter, earnings record. Download and save.

• You will be sent 10 codes for future use to access your account. Print a hard copy and save a digital copy.

From now on, log in after filing your tax returns to make sure your earnings are added to your record. If the system is broken by the red bull chugging adolescents, you will at least have your history with Social Security.
